When to Start Placement Prep
The biggest mistake engineering students make is waiting until their final year to start placement preparation. By then you have just 3–4 months before campus drives — nowhere near enough time to build the skills top companies look for.

- 3rd Year (Semester 5–6): Build 2–3 strong projects, complete at least one internship, begin DSA practice on LeetCode
- 4th Year (Semester 7): Mock interviews, company-specific prep, resume finalisation, open-source contributions

Building an ATS-Optimised Resume

- Use data points — "India's IT exports crossed $200 billion in 2024..." elevates your contribution instantly
- Acknowledge others — "Building on what Priya mentioned..." shows you are actively listening
- Stay structured — use the PEEL framework: Point, Example, Explanation, Link back to topic
- Manage conflict gracefully — if interrupted, wait for a pause and say "I would like to complete my point..."
- Quality over quantity — three structured, evidence-backed points beat ten filler statements

Negotiating Your First Offer
Most freshers accept the first offer without negotiating. This is a mistake — starting salary has a compounding effect on your entire career trajectory.
Research market rates first. Check Glassdoor, AmbitionBox, and LinkedIn Salary for the exact role, company, and city. Know your market value before any conversation.
Negotiate components, not just base. CTC includes base salary, joining bonus, performance bonus, and sometimes ESOPs. If the base is fixed (common at service companies), negotiate a higher joining bonus.
Use competing offers as leverage. "I have an offer from Company X at ₹Y CTC. Is there room to match or exceed that?" is a professional and effective approach.
Get all promises in writing. The offer letter must detail the complete CTC breakdown, joining date, designation, probation period, and any benefits discussed verbally.
Be ready to walk away. The ability to decline respectfully gives you genuine negotiating power. Know your minimum acceptable offer before the conversation begins.
